UluWatu
After an hours drive, we arrived in UluWatu, on the very southern coast of Bali, and world renowned surf spot. We visited 4 or 5 homestay's before finding "The Gong" a charming, family run guest house 5 minutes from the famous temple Puri Luhar Ulu Watu and 10 minutes from another good surf spot Padang Padang. However we had to wait 3 hours before getting our room, our bathroom door locked itself at 10pm and we had to call someone to climb through a tiny window to open it and finally our motorbike got a flat and we had to walk home....ahem ahem All good fun!
The countryside however is gorgeous here, short grass and large luscious trees.....a bit like England but with coconut trees and thin cows!
But........I have to say that i am a bit disapointed about this area as i imagined it otherwise.
For example, Pecatu Indah ressort, 400 hectares of wasted money..... As you enter under the towering statues of monkey gods, all you can see is a never ending road, lined with coconut trees mechanically planted. Then you come upon the immense hotels and appartment villas that have not quite been finished and never will be, leaving huge grey buildings with wires poking out in every direction. As you get closer to the sea, a parking at 5000 rp is cut out of the cliffside, the road is not a road but a clay-like dirt track, which leads to a sort of seaside resort, abandoned or in construction, the walls are stained and random holes in buildings have been made for air vents as if they had completly forgotten to put them in at the start. There is rubbish at your feet (unlikely for Bali), a sort of brown river is ready to overflow onto the beach at any moment (i didn't ask what made it so brown) and large concrete structures invade the beach... This "beach" was once know as "Dream land".
Dreamland is but one of the many places ruined by ambitious greed.
The resort also houses a 18 hole golf course (which is finished..!) and is at the moment hosting the Ladies Indonesia open. However it is all but green.....They have to bring in water from Denpasar, the capital, to keep it running... A huge deception.
